Summer Intersession

Year 1: 2025 – 2026

A self-made portrait of varying different physical representations of Francine.

Artifact 1: This is a self-portrait of myself. I created this by following the format of Dr. Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot’s ideas of portraiture. We continued this development over the span of summer quarter and consistently added to it throughout the quarter as we learned more about portraiture. My image really represents the different versions of me that culminate into who my students will see me as an educator. The multiple characteristics of portraiture are the context, voice, relationship, emergent themes, and aesthetic whole. I found that I could not envision one singular image to encompass my whole being and instead needed to showcase my self through snapshots into my versions of being. These snapshots portray a more accurate description of myself and show the different contexts through which I exist.

A collage of photos taken during the Chinatown-International District Community Walk

Artifact 2: During the final day of our in-person summer intersession, we performed a community walk through the Chinatown-International District. This walk was accompanied with a list of memorials that we visited during the Japanese Remembrance Trail throughout the neighborhood. The memorials I chose for my walk were Chiyo’s Garden and the Tsutakawa Statue. This community walk was especially memorable and impactful on me purely because I lived in the Capitol Hill neighborhood only a 15 minute streetcar ride away so the Chinatown-International District was not unfamiliar to me. I had never done the Japanese Remembrance Trail and this was an opportunity for me to reexamine this neighborhood in a more socially-centered way.

Seeing the CID in a different light was eye-opening because of how real the neighborhood felt and how alive it was compared to when I would visit before in less intentional ways. This helped me to really add to my experience of learning how to be a socially-conscious educator by being present in geographic areas that are significant to different cultures than my own.
